Somebody's gonna steal the show....

So, I check the blog this morning and there are 12 comments from one person. What a nice present............................

Seems I've been bad. Baby doctor sez "bed rest" for the coming week, then we''ll see if it's to continue. I doubt very much there's any real evidence that bed rest helps, but it's certainly a good way to get rid of a troublesome pregnant female. I feel very much like I've been grounded, a feeling only made stronger by my mom moving in temporarily.

Don't get me wrong, I take this stuff very seriously. And I'm glad of the help. Im extremely lucky to have it. Pain has been a problem for the last couple of months and more recently I'm having a lot of trouble walking. Stairs are off limits. Getting me in and out of the tub has become a community project.

Anyway, I'm stuck with very little to do and far too much on my mind. The doctor suggested I work on my scrap books, which about made me choke and my mother laugh out loud [nothing wrong with it, it's just not my thing]. I have a much better idea, I'm cataloging my records for insurance purposes, which is a more complicated project than you might imagine, especially when you're not allowed to lift boxes.

So, I'm having the stacks delivered to my bed one at a time. I have my portable player, laptop, and scanner all close at hand. In between napping, and playing Fable 3, I'm scanning each 45, making notes about condition, and then referencing each to a realistic price quote [I don't want the valuation so high I can't afford the policy rider].

While I'm at it, I'm ripping a few nice ones I've overlooked in the past. The rips sound pretty good since I replaced the original cartridge with a nicer one.

Now that I think about it, my little project isn't all that different from scrapbooking, is it?

This is probably one of the first ten 45's I ever bought. Just had to have it.

Hope ya'll enjoy....

  1. That sounds like a major project. Scrapbooking for the obsessed music nerd. Kind of makes me glad that most of my stuff is scratchy old junk... But not really.
    Good luck.

  3. Jeff...you don't think I own any scratchy old junk? Don't tempt me or I'll post my collection of singles by the Grassroots [which are actually quite cool].

Mostly it's a matter of quantity. Even if the average value of my records is figured at $1 each, it still works out to a healthy chunk of change to lose if, god forbid, some idiot decides to fill up a few boxes. If you push that average to $5 each, it starts getting serious.

Ya gotta figure you're talking to someone who's seen everything suddenly disappear before and also someone who really doesn't own a lot except records. Kind of hard to hit an insurance agent with the news that the most expensive thing in the house [by far] is the record collection if you don't do some preparation first.

  4. No mystery here as to why you "just had to have it"
    Excellent side. Thank you!
I hope you are up and dancing real soon. I can relate, I'm normally a very active person, but I was out of commission for most of the summer because of a very annoying, and painful injury, that resulted in surgery a few weeks ago. It's much better now but, damn, I loathe dealing with recovery and down time. And from what I've gathered from the posts on your blog, you don't seem to be a fan of the inactive lifestyle either.
I nearly hit the floor in laughter when I read your doctor's scrapbook suggestion, but you're right, having a large collection of anything that needs cataloguing is not all that different. I can feel for you because I'm in the middle of sorting and cataloguing thousands of LP's, CD's and books to be insured before they go into temporary storage while I try to rebuild my house. Putting all that stuff in order is a lot of work, but at times it can also be a lot of fun.
May you be well, happy, peaceful, and rockin'!

  5. Thanks for the kind note Jem.

Yeah, it's tough being laid up. I don't like it one bit. Whats making it worse though is the myth that you're supposed to be able to waddle right thru pregnancy, no problem. I keep hearing, "well, I drove myself to the hospital the first time", and "what are you doing in bed?, you're not even that far along". Apparently these folks have ever heard of a complicated pregnancy.

Not to get too personal, but you're having to rebuild your house? I'm not really asking for info, it's just that whatever the reason, my heart goes out to ya.

    ana...

  6. I've been meaning to do this too. I also want to make a Google spreadsheet with all of my 45s on there so if I'm anyplace I can quickly look up online if I have something, it's condition etc....

  7. Hey Colby...ya know, that's a great idea. First and foremost, it's just smart to have the info offloaded onto the web. I don't know if you were around NO in 2005 but it was BIG problem having data tied to specific hardware. I mean that in a general way.

Also, it would be dreamy to have access to a list of what I already own...it doesn't happen all that often, but I do occasionally buy things I already in the collection.

  8. I meant to add "by mistake" to the above.

Btw Colby....believe me, I'm very shy of connections made online...and in no way wish to intrude on anyone's privacy, ever....but you work at the purple place, right?

Only asking because you did drop a small clue, and it is a very small world/neighborhood.
