No use pretending...

As I'm sure I said in a previous post, most if not all Joe Haywood sides issued on New Orleans labels were recorded in NYC.

The arranger/producer on this cut, Larry Lucie, is considered by some to have been one of the great jazz guitar players and was for many years a well known bandleader/teacher in NYC. Lucie was with both Louis Armstrong's and Duke Ellington's bands during important periods for each. When he died last year at age 101, we lost the last of the musicians to have played with Jelly Roll Morton.

Took me awhile to get my hands on this one [at the right price]. Too bad that at 1:47 it's far too short. I mean really, doncha think it would have been fairly easy to add another minute to this track?

Anyway, it's an interesting 45, made more so by the credits. Ya'll do know who Sterling McGee [or Magee] is, right?

A Toussaint piano roll [with no piano?]

Some folks think this single was recorded in New Orleans even though it's clear that most [if not all] Joe Haywood singles issued on Deesu and White Cliffs were the result of licensing deals made by Marshall Sehorn through his long-standing connections in New York.

While it is strange that the record was first issued on Deesu, and only showed up some two years later on the Kent label as, (Play Me) A Cornbread Song......I'm still dubious of the claim to Crescent City origination.

Why? Well, let's just say I don't exactly hear what some others do.

But ya know, ultimately, who really cares?

Sometimes it's best to just play the record and enjoy.
