Just in case ya'll needed more proof that I'm a sick woman....
Two copies of the same record with different versions of the same song. Both are tough to find for a reasonable price, however the version without strings usually sells for a premium.
Hope ya'll enjoy.....
Shock I was expecting it to be the promo with no strings & the standard issue to have strings.
ReplyDeleteDrunkenHobo...Funny thing, the versions don't break down along those lines at all. There are definitely standard copies with strings. The only way to tell them apart visually, is to look at the run out codes.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure which was released first, or for that matter if they were both released at the same time.
Thanks for this- Dr. Mable John is one of the coolest musicians I ever met. She survived Gordy and Stax to run the Raelettes- nice resume!
ReplyDeleteJohnny (BOOMING BASSLINES)
Oh indeed Johnny, the coolest ever.
ReplyDeleteProbably got to spank her brother Little Willie a few times as well. I forget how much older she was, but it was enough that she was born in Louisiana and he wasn't.
Which reminds me, I totally need to post some Little Willie John.
ReplyDeleteWow I didn't realize they were siblings! "Suffering w/ the Blues" is my fave Little Willie, but I bet you got an underrated gem or two in your boxes...
ReplyDeleteI love everything about this post. You've been killin' it recently Ana. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteTravis...ahhh, but Suffering the Blues has such a great flip...
ReplyDeleteLittle Danny...that's very high praise coming from you. Btw, sorry about the most recent comment on your blog...I have this problem which is my equivalent of commenting while drunk...it's posting at 2 AM while I'm up feeding the baby. I really need to stop it.
Posts like this are one of the many reasons I keep coming back here. it's great to hear both versions of this song. I do believe that I prefer the no strings version. I love her voice. I, also, had no idea that she was related to Little Willie John. And, yes you should do a Little Willie John post. I look forward to it. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteJem...after I posted this it occurred to me that of course the version without strings is the rarer issue. Later re-issues are all with strings. Funny thing is, I was quite happy with the stringed version, until I found the stringless.
