Just a note....

For those who poo-pooed concerns over recent "anti-piracy" initiatives....earlier today the FBI, Justice Dept., took down Megaupload....even without SOPA.

  1. Whoa! I knew it would effect us (the hobby bloggers) in some way or another. This is a real drag...

  2. I suspect Mediafire may be next....or alternatively that this was meant to scare Mediafire et al into making certain "consessions".....either way, I doubt it's good news for bloggers.

The amazing thing is that Megaupload had a very large share of the business file transfer market.

  3. Looks like MegaUpload has enough money to defend itself. I agree, they're just the first in line to go down. Wonder how CEO Swizz Beatz escaped? Nice to see they got an endorsement from Kim Kardashian lol.

  4. Rockin Mike...as I understand it, the Feds have seized all Mega-related domains. If past seizures are any sort of guide, it will take a very long time to get those domains returned, if in fact, they are ever returned.

And I may be wrong about this, but since the crew at Mega are being charged with racketeering....all assets will be frozen. In the mean time 7 people are in custody and it's estimated that it may take up to a year to get them extradited to the U.S.

  5. Ana- You're right about the racketeering, they're also charged with money laundering, along with copyright infringement. Looks like they made the mistake of having servers in Virginia, which gave federal authorities jurisdiction. Should be interesting, they could be the test case for everyone else.
