Just can't see my way around....

Another largely overlooked Dorsey/Toussaint gem.

Little Ba-by, from 1968...

  1. Way cool! I love Lee Dorsey and I didn't know this one before. Can you post the flip side?

  2. Glad ya like the tune Yankee Boy.

As far as the flip-side is concerned...well, not to put too fine of point on it....it's probably the worst song Dorsey ever recorded, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself a Letter [Toussaint did not write it].

One of reasons most folks have never heard Little Ba-by is cause they can't get past the awfulness on the flip.

  3. I completely agree! That was the first Dorsey 45 I bought and I didn't know anything about it and played that side first thinking that was the "A" Side and was shocked at how cheesy it was..Doesn't sound like Toussaint at all. Thank goodness for that awesome B side!!

  4. Hey Alejandro...yeah, when I see this 45 on ebay, it's almost always listed under I'm Gonna Sit Right Down, as though that's the a-side. Glad you were smart enough to flip it over.

I only have one other Dorsey single I don't like....but only because the songs are bland, not because they're total junk.

  5. ALong with Bobby Marchan, Lee Dorsey is one of my all-time favorite singers. He could sing the phone book and make it sound good. I just ordered a copy of this from Gemm Music so I'll hear for myself how bad the flip side is.

  6. Your blog is stupendously super. I spent most of the afternoon going through all your posts and making a NOLA compilation that will provide hours and hours of pleasure.

You make a few references to eBay, and I imagine you score a lot of your treasures there, but I'm guessing you also do lots of crate digging in New Orleans. Would you be able to share a recommendation for a local record store that would have a really good selection of CDs from the contemporary brass band scene?

  7. Yankee Boy...just so you know, I buy every Dorsey 45 I can find...bang for the buck is huge..personally speaking, I think you're smart, but ya know, not every single is a great two-sider.

  8. Hey Cold World...

Thank you for the lovely note, you're definitely someone after my own heart. I haven't posted any brass band stuff, mainly because I assume it's a little hard-core 'New Orleans' for most folks.

I do some buying on ebay, but not a lot. To me it's too much like gambling, and thus I have to be careful. I do indeed have a very addictive personality. I do most of my buying online through a second party.

If you happen to be in the New Orleans area, my favorite record store is Domino Sound Record Shack, 2557 Bayou Rd. In fact, here's a clip of the Hot 8 brass band playing outside the store.

Unfortunately, Domino doesn't have a presence online. So, If you'd like a good place to buy online, I'd suggest the Louisiana Sound Factory site.

    Here's a link to that site: http://www.louisianamusicfactory.com/

    Hope that helps...

  9. Correction: It's the Louisiana Music Factory....not Louisiana Sound Factory.

  10. Oh, and just because this is my blog and I can afford to run on and on and on...

Allen Toussaint is utterly brilliant....I buy everything that's even vaguely associated with him. Period.

  11. Thanks for the tip. I'm very temporarily living in NOLA right up the street from Bayou Rd., just off Gentilly, and had been thinking Domino looked like a good spot to peruse for some brass! Hadn't been in yet, but that will change tomorrow.

I wonder if anything resembling a complete Toussaint discography exists anywhere? I imagine there are dozens of records he was involved in that are out there awaiting rediscovery. He gave a charming and graceful performance at Joe's Pub last year. He said he has basically moved to New York since Katrina, but I imagine he is back and forth.

Anyway, thanks for the wicked tunes.

  12. Cold World....goodness, you're literally only a few blocks away from Domino. I think you'll find it's one of the better record stores you've ever been in. Or perhaps it simply suits me to a tee?

I'm not aware of a complete Toussaint discography, not in the way I think of complete. It would involve going through records on numerous labels....knowing not only what he's credited with by also those on which he's not credited. I find previously unknown to me Toussaint produced/arranged recordings pretty-darn-often.

I'm sure the show at Joe's Pub was nice....it's a sweet venue.

Mr. Toussaint is nothing if not gracious and charming.
