Samson and Delilah really out-did themselves on this one. It flat-out slams. They come out swinging with what may be the only gospel influenced male/female duet ever written about 'simultaneous mutual satisfaction' and almost succeed in knocking Sam and Dave's, Hold On I'm Coming, out of the ring. [sorry about the awful metaphor, I recently saw my very first boxing match...I'm at an impressionable age, ok?]
In short, if this song wasn't meant as a slightly more explicit answer to Sam and Dave's song, then I'll eat my fuzzy knit cap...and I don't wanna do that cause it's cold here.
Here's a shout-out to Gabe over at Second Line Social for reminding me of this monster. Several months ago he posted a copy as part of a mix. I've been listening to it ever since, the mix that is. [Gabe is a great DJ, if you're ever in Austin TX be sure to catch him with the Soul Happening crew]
The original pressing of this record was on Red Cap, and it usually goes for a good-sized chunk of change, if you can find it. The ABC pressing costs quite a bit less. Like, one quarter as much. I'm just sayin' cause this is one of those times where the tune is so good that I could care less about what label it's on. That is, until a Red Cap pressing falls in my lap.

Yankee Boy, the only nice Red Cap copy I see is from Manship, and they want almost $70 for it. The other Red Cap copies I found were much lower grade. In fact, the only copy of the 45 I see listed as M- is on ABC.....If I missed something, you might drop me a direct link to the page at singbones@yahoo.com, that is if you have the time.
ReplyDeleteI'm relatively cheap, I can count on one hand the number of records I've paid more than $40 for. In 'my crowd' this makes me close to a bottom feeder.

I found one in M- from Craig Moerer for $30. Most people are listing it by the other side "Woman" and there is a M- copy from a guy in England for about $26. For me to pay more than $40 or $50 for a record it has to be really special. There are still enough great records out there for not much money - although once something is labeled "Northern Soul", the price goes way up.

ReplyDeleteIn the past, what's gotten me in trouble price-wise is the feeling that I gotta have a particular record, now! Of the four times I've spent over $40, twice I found a cheaper suitable copy within days afterwards. Only one of those buys nags at me in that, 'gee i over-paid for that record' way.
Luckily I don't have a major fetish for mint records, nor am I a huge fan of 'Northern Soul', at least not to the point where I'll even consider paying some of the asking prices.
I did recently pay $70 for something, and that's as high as I've gone. But it's rare beastie, the copy is mint, it's also the only DJ copy i've ever seen on that label....and I can probably get twice what I paid in trade.
I'm actually happiest when I can find a beat-up copy of something rarish for under $10, one that still plays pretty well...

Hey J....the info I have say's the ABC pressing came out in 1967. How much earlier the Red Cap issue came out, if at all, is unknown to me. Chances are, it was '67 on both labels.
