Stronger than Eddie Bo....

My favorite of Mary Jane Hooper's tiny discography. Eddie Bo wrote it, produced it, helps out with the vocals, and undoubtedly plays the organ.

Sing it sister!

  1. I also share your love for this record and although some people feel is not that great, I also really like the flip side "I Feel A Hurt"(Eddie's organ intro is great). I once saw a copy of "That's How Strong Love Is" on a different label (remember it was green, maybe Scram?) and the flip side was a very cool cover of "Harper Valley PTA". I never saw it again but I keep looking! Do you have it, maybe?

  2. Great record. I just found a nice copy on Gemm Music. It was kind of on the expensive side but it's such a good record I couldn't resist. If I haven't already told you, I think your blog is amazing. My dream vacation is to spend a week at your house with a box of CD-Rs and a recorder (no, this isn't a hint for an invite but if you're ever in NYC, let me know.)

  3. Hey Perrata

You're thinking of the original issue[s] on Power/Power Pac...it has a yellow label and the b-side is Harper Valley PTA. It's the same label that "I've Got Reasons/Teach Me" was issued on.

This pressing is actually the more sought after of the two because of "I Feel a Hurt". Maybe you agree it's a better song than her version of "Harper Valley PTA"?...or maybe not?

Anyway, nope, I don't own the Power 45 because even though I could definitely use a better copy of "That's How Strong", I'd still crave a better copy of "I Feel a Hurt" also....it's a song I really love.

[Btw, I posted "I Feel a Hurt" some time ago. If anyone want's to hear the b-side just click on Mary Jane Hooper in the side-bar.]

  4. Hey Yankee Boy...

Yeah, unfortunately that's what they sell for....even my beat-up copy cost me about twice what I would have liked to pay. I'm actually rather jealous of you because I sure would like to own a VG+ or better copy.

NYC is my 'third' home...I'm in the city at least twice a year.

  5. I had no idea this was the more sought after version (I paid no more than 5 bucks!), I always thought it was the other one... I absolutely agree, I Feel a Hurt is an amazing song although I've read some people dismissing it for some reason as "throw away". My reaction was "WHAT?I love that song!!!" Still, would like to get my hands on tHarper Valley PTA. Thanks for clarifying what the label was, hopefully that will make it easier to track down.

  6. Perrata...really? five bucks?...now that's a genuine steal. I've never seen a copy of this record offered for that price, not ever. If I had, I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

Usually, it sells for about the same price as a copy of "I've Got Reasons", which should give you a clue.

Ya know, everything depends on what kind of collector you are....I never buy anything I don't like, regardless of the price. Original pressing or not. I want the music. And I make up my own mind about what's good. That's why I post some killer $1 records.

Just gotta say, anyone who thinks "I Feel a Hurt" is a throw-away is a stone cold pretentious idiot.

Send 'em my way, I'm ready for a fight.

  7. I couldn't agree more. Love 1 buck treasures. Nicely put and way to follow up with Lover and A Friend! Now, I doubt I'll ever find that for 5 bucks...Never even seen the Capitol one in an affordable range. If you ever see it send me a line!

  8. Perrata...I'll keep my eyes open, a nice copy of "Lover And A Friend" is something I'd always like to see in good hands, especially if it was got for a good price.
